Steps to better decisions - two hours

Goal: Participants will make significant decisions with an organized approach that includes all reasonable options, consideration of the likely outcomes and cost of each option, and effects on all stakeholders.

The quality of our work and our lives depends, to a great extent on the quality of the decisions we make.  However decision-making is something most of us learn only by experience.  For significant decisions an organized process will help us avoid common mistakes and consider all pertinent information.  This seminar provides such a process and helps participants learn to apply that process to their own decisions.

The steps discussed in this seminar are:

  • Keep the goal in mind.

  • Gather & analyze information.

  • List options & possible outcomes.

  • Determine outcome probabilities.

  • List possible consequences and benefits for each outcome.

  • Do cost-benefit analysis for outcomes.

  • Look at changing the probabilities.

  • Examine legal/moral issues.

  • Listen to a devil's advocate (or be one yourself).

  • Is it worth the risk?

  • Can you tolerate a bad outcome?

  • Put it together and decide.

The seminar takes each step, discusses its importance and asks participants to demonstrate how they would apply it in making their own decisions.  A brief review follows to help put it all together.
